One Direction are following in the footsteps of Madonna, The Beatles and the Queen by becoming immortalised – in the form of Madame Tussaud’s waxwork figures.
The five-piece band – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Niall Horan – have already been measured up for their wax alter-egos.
And keen to keep the similarities between the wax versions and the real-life versions tight, Tussaud’s is even taking the five figures on a worldwide tour.
1D embarked on their Take Me Home world tour last month and are currently enjoying the UK leg.
But their wax figures look set to follow in their wake as once they’ve been unveiled in London on April 18, the models will then travel to the New York and Sydney branches of the famous attraction so fans have even more chances to get their hands on the fivesome.
Admitting he was taken aback when they were told they were to be immortalised, Harry said: ‘We’re just kind of a bit overwhelmed. We’ve been to Madame Tussauds and seen the kind of people who are in there. It’s crazy to think that we will up there with them.’
Louis echoed Harry’s thoughts, adding: ‘I think it’s going to be quite weird to see yourself as a wax figure. But it’s an amazing honour to be there. We are very proud.’
And Zayn agreed, saying: ‘All the biggest stars around the world get these wax figures made of them and why are we, five normal lads, getting these made? It’s an amazing honour, really cool and we can’t wait to see them.’
The boys first had hundreds of measurements taken for their wax figures, which are costing a staggering £150,000 each, in January
Keen to make them as realistic as possible, Madame Tussauds confirmed the boys will be seated on a school-style double bench which will allow devoted fans to really get up close to them.
Liam said: ‘We actually first heard when we were over at Madame Tussauds looking at the figures. The quality of the work that goes on over there is mad.’
And Niall added: ”We were super excited to find out that they were making us and that people felt we were worthy of a figure.’
The 1D wax tour begins at Madame Tussaud’s in London on April 18 where the boys will stay until July 11.
They will then head to New York where they will stay until October 11 before making their way to Sydney from October 24 to January 28 2014.
Liz Wells, Global Head of Marketing for Madame Tussaud’s said: ‘We have been overwhelmed by requests for us to feature One Direction.
‘Louis, Liam, Harry, Zayn and Niall have been involved throughout the sculpting process and discussing the style their figures will be portrayed in.’
Principle sculptor, Stephen Mansfield, added: ‘We are acutely aware that millions of fans around the world will have a lot to say about these figures and we are determined not to let them down.
‘The boys have been a delight to work with, really co-operative and a huge amount of fun.
