One Direction have signed a US record deal in a bid to try and break America.
Niall, Harry, Louis, Liam and Zayn have joined Columbia Records, which is home to the likes of Adele and David Bowie.
Earlier this week, Band member Louis Tomlinson confirmed that the boys were set to embark on a US tour in the coming months.
“Obviously, we haven’t really done that much promotion over in the States so it’s going to be interesting to see where we stand,” he said.
According to The Sun, One Direction will tour America in February and March next year.
Confirmation of their deal with Columbia comes in the same week that the band released their debut album ‘Up All Night’.
The record features the single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Gotta Be You’.
Femalefirst published a review of Up All Night:
One Direction have a couple of tough weeks to follow, including new albums from boy-band rivals JLS and The Wanted, as they release their debut record.
Up All Night, made up of some brilliantly produced power-pop numbers, will take the former X Factor competitors even further into the mainstream.
As mainstream music, and newer boybands in particular, are seeing a shift towards a manufactured, club-influenced sound, Up All Night doesn’t suffer from these problems.
Yes, it has such moments – the title track is the worst on the record, but the likes of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘One Thing’ will bring in fans of Jonas Brothers with nice harmonies and crisp melodies.
Whilst the lyrics are as predictable as we’ve come to expect from this kind of act, the music allows their vocals to show surprising maturity.
This isn’t reinventing the wheel by any stretch of the imagination – the main hook of “One Thing” bares a certain uncanny similarity to “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys, for a start.
However, their fanbase aren’t interested in what came before them – in One Direction, Simon Cowell’s Syco label may have found its teen heroes.
Parents will be able to enjoy the Take That-esque sounds of ballad ‘Taken’, and the album has a whole has a diverse sound that lends itself well to a wider mainstream appeal.
The writing credits are impressive, with the likes of Kelly Clarkson (‘Tell Me A Lie’) contributing to the record.
A highlight is ‘I Want’ – immediately recognisable as a Tom Fletcher-written song, it would be perfectly at home on a McFly record.
One Direction perform the song well, and Up All Night is helped by having such a strong track – that said, it brings up concerns of a musical identity crisis when the songwriters can let their own voices be heard to this extent.
For all its highlights, the likes of ‘Save You Tonight’ (as catchy as it is) and ‘Everything About You’ feel a little too cliched and void of character.
As a whole, Up All Night struggles to find a consistency in quality, but One Direction do well enough on the record (with some great moment littered throughout) to make it a strong debut.
Now as we’re all One Direction fans here, we know that the boys desperately wanted their second single, Gotta Be You, to smash it’s way in to the number one spot on Sunday. However, One Direction entered the chart at number three only being beaten by Rihanna (feat Calvin Harris) We Found Love and Flo Rida Good Feeling.
Now we don’t want the boys being too disappointed because NUMBER THREE IS STILL AN AMAZING POSITION that many artists would dream of.
After entering the chart at three, Liam Payne tweeted, “Sad we didn’t get number one today xx massive thanks to everyone who bought the single tho you guys are amazing.”
The boys are now focusing on the release of their album, Up All Night, which comes out today.
Harry Styles tweeted this morning, “Album ‘Up All Night’ is out today!! Get your hands on it here! http://bit.ly/pzhbcn let us know what you think .xx”
We hope the boys aren’t too disappointed. Let’s all leave comments and tweet them messages of love to let them know how bleedin’ proud we are.
As for next week’s chart position… who knows?
What do you think about Gotta Be You coming in at number 3? A travesty? Or just really proud? Comments below please!
One Direction’s Harry Styles said he is just “close friends” with Caroline Flack but refused to rule out a future romance, adding: “We’ll see what happens.”
The 17-year-old failed to put an end to speculation about his relationship with the 32-year-old Xtra Factor presenter during a visit to Whiteleys Shopping Centre in Bayswater, west London, to promote the band’s debut album Up All Night.
Flack was pictured with the teenage star on a night out in London last week.
After online criticism of the rumoured romance, she later tweeted to say they were just good friends and she did not deserve the death threats which had been posted.
Asked about the threats, Styles said: “A lot of people write things on the internet and a lot of the time they don’t think about what they are writing or how it’s going to affect people.
“It’s a shame people say that. We are close friends.”
Styles added: “We are friends. We hang out sometimes but that’s about it for now. We’ll see what happens.”
One Direction were more than an hour late for their shopping centre appearance but the wait did not put off the crowd of hundreds of screaming girls.
The band, which came third in last year’s X Factor, also includes Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne.
The boys said they were closely following this year’s X Factor and were backing girl-band Little Mix. “They’re just smashing it. If you look at them I think they are the most obvious gap in the market,” Payne said. “They can be the top artists I think.”
To celebrate the release of Up All Night, One Direction took part in a gift wrap challenge to help wrap the first load of orders of Up All Night (Louis won, completing the chalenge in 15.9 seconds) !
