1D’s Niall Horan relives the ‘absolutely nuts’ fan reaction during the band’s Up All Night tour and tells us which city has been the rowdiest.
One Direction have been taking their boy band antics across the States since May for their first-ever American headlining tour. And, with only days left on the massive Up All Night jaunt, 1D-er Niall Horan, recalled with MTV News the “absolutely nuts” time they’ve had.
“It’s been, as you can see clearly, it’s been absolutely nuts. We’re still trying to get out head around it,” he said, hours before hitting the stage in Charlotte. “It’s been crazy. We’ve had a lot of fun … we’re doing these things called sheds, so they’re outside and inside. There are like 20,000 people on an outdoor gig and they’re really good to do. They’re really fun. It’s really warm outside and the crowds, they’re amazing.”
With fans doing anything they can to get the guys’ attention while they’re on stage (including throwing bras at them) Niall says that the last few shows have included far fewer undergarments being tossed at the stage.
“They’ve kind of toned it down a little bit. It was worse. Now it’s kind of iPhones and keys, which are kind of dangerous.
“When we were in New York, we were on our day off and me and Liam [Payne] was going down the street with one of our security guards and we got absolutely mobbed by like 600 people in Times Square,” he said. “I thought ‘There is literally not one place I can walk down the street.’ ”
But, it’s not just screaming girls who are turning out to see the guys. Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell tweeted about attending the 1D show in Atlanta, a show that just happened to be one of Niall’s favorites (or at least the loudest). “We didn’t have a clue what we were singing. We couldn’t hear anything,” he said. “We’re very lucky we’ve got amazing crowds. We never have a bad crowd. We’re very lucky we kind of get the adrenaline rush off them.”
While Atlanta may have been the rowdiest show, New Jersey remains Niall’s favorite for the opposite reason. “Harry [Styles] got the crowd to take their phones and lights out of their pocket and we turned off the lights so you couldn’t see the crowd and all you could see are the lights swaying,” he said. “I think that was a special night cause we thought it’s all very high-energy, but when the show is taken down like a somber level it’s quite nice.”
5 ‘One Direction’ Tour Secrets Revealed: Celebuzz Backstage With Opening Act Manika
Manika is currently touring with One Direction and as one of their opening acts, the 18-year-old powerhouse is having the experience of her life. Celebuzz sat down with Manika backstage at their concert in Anaheim on Sunday, where she talked about holding it down as the only girl on the road.
“They are so awesome,” Manika said. “They are such fun guys, so down to earth. They’re teenage boys– they’re crazy sometimes! They were just in [my dressing room] messing with these beach balls I throw out on stage. They were having a contest of who could pop it off their butt the best.”
So who popped it best?
“Well, Niall was pretty good at it,” smiled Manika. “I couldn’t get to do it because I was getting ready. But I would probably beat them all.”
Since Manika is the envy of girls all over the world, we asked her to tell us one thing about each of the One Direction boys that fans might not know:
Well, Niall is really friendly.
Zayn just got this new razor scooter, actually, it’s more of a bike that he just drives around everywhere.
Liam is such a sweetheart– like the other day he just gave me Beats by Dre headphones for no reason. He just is so sweet and such a sweetheart.
Harry is again, just really nice. His hair really is all over the place! He will flip it all over the place, which is great because I just love to flip my hair all over the place too!
Louie is just really funny. During sound check the other day, during my song ‘Good Girl,’ I was performing it for sound check and I say, ‘All right, all the girls out there I want to see you firsts in the air and jump.’ And Niall and Louie were jumping and screaming.
Manika and Carly Rae Jepsen are two of the big up and comers in the industry right now, so how does she handle the comparisons?
“I actually haven’t met her, but she’s great!” Manika said. “I was watching her music video and the end is hilarious. At the end, the girl is like, with this super hot guy she’s trying to get with and then he’s gay! Seriously, it’s just like living in West Hollywood. A lot of times, I’m like, he’s either gay or he likes me. Half the time he ends of being gay and half the time he likes me. It’s just confusing because I just want to know. Very relatable!”
As for dream collaborations, Manika would love to work with Beyonce, Alanis Morissette and Eminem.
“You will be surprised, when someone puts on a rap song, I can rap to every word,” she laughed.
With their 2012 tour of the United States completely sold out and commitments lined up for the rest of the year that will keep them from returning, One Direction has gone ahead and scheduled a tour of North American arenas for Summer 2013.
Fans gobbled up tickets to the British boy band’s May/June 2012 tour, as well as its Dec. 3 show at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. The group announced on Thursday that their 2013 world tour will begin a 25-city run in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on June 13 and will stop in New York City, Chicago, Denver, Montreal and Las Vegas before wrapping up in Los Angeles on Aug. 7.
Tickets go on sale Saturday April 21, at Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com.
“Our fans are simply the best in the world,” member Niall Horan says. “The support they have shown us has been incredible and we’re all so grateful to each and every one of them. We can’t wait to see everyone this summer, at Madison Square Garden and of course when we play our world tour in 2013.”
1D recently made chart history by scoring a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming the first U.K. act to see their debut album start in the top spot. The group — Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis — performed on “Saturday Night Live” on April 7 and appeared in a recent episode of “iCarly.”
Their 2012 headlining trek through North America kicks off on May 24 in Fairfax, Va.

As previously reported, the tour dates conflict with the dates that Murs would be required to be at “X factor” U.K. auditions as co-host of “The Xtra Factor,” which leaves his future with the show in doubt.
Murs took to Twitter to announce the news about touring with One Direction:
“I can confirm I am joining @onedirection on their US tour from 29th May as special guest!! Columbia US releasing HSAB in the summer!! #pucka”
Murs’ U.S. first single is “Heart Skips a Beat” (featuring Rizzle Kicks), which was a No. 1 hit in the U.K. and Poland. “Heart Skips a Beat” also reached the Top 10 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Ireland.
Former “X Factor” U.K. finalists Murs and One Direction have the same management company (Modest Management) and the same U.S. record company (Syco Music/Columbia Records). Syco Music, which is co-owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music. Columbia is also a Sony Music label.
“Murs, whose first North American releases will come out through Columbia this summer, will play 19 shows of the 27-date tour after he has played Soccer Aid on May 27. His stint will begin with two dates in Toronto, Canada, on May 29 and 31, while the tour will then move to the US in June and finishes on July 1 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.”
One Direction’s North American tour begins May 24, 2012 in Fairfax, Virginia. More dates on the tour are to be announced. The first announced dates on the tour sold out within minutes.
One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. Murs came in second place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2009.
Murs had had several No. 1 hits in the U.K., and although One Direction has sold more albums worldwide than Murs has, Murs actually outsold One Direction in the U.K. in 2011. He has released two hit albums in the U.K.: 2010′s “Olly Murs” and and 2011′s “In Case You Didn’t Know.” It has not yet been announced which album will be released first in the U.S., but it will presumably be “In Case You Didn’t Know,” because the album’s first single is “Heart Skips a Beat,” which will be Murs’ first U.S. single. (Murs is signed to Sony Music’s Syco Music/Epic Records in the U.K.)
Murs’ “Heart Skips a Beat” and One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” were nominated for Best British Single at the 2012 Brit Awards (which are voted on by the public), and One Direction won the prize. One Direction and JLS are the only two former “X Factor” acts so far that have won Brit Awards.
Meanwhile, it is not yet been announced if Murs will return as co-host of “The Xtra Factor.” He has made conflicting statements to the media about whether or not he would be returning to the show. It’s all looking like Murs was negotiating for a hefty raise for “The Xtra Factor,” and he decided to take the more lucrative option of touring with One Direction.
Murs and Caroline Flack became co-hosts of “The Xtra Factor” in May 2011. “The Xtra Factor” has not made an official announcement about who will be hosting the show in 2012 and is not commenting on it at this time.
The Sun is reporting that Murs will return as co-host of “The Xtra Factor” in 2012, but only during the live episodes.
One Direction are a British-Irish boy band made up of Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik. They took part in the 10th series of X Factor UK in 2010 where they finished in third place. The boys were then signed to Syco Records and released their record-breaking debut album "Up All Night" in 2011, and their second album "Take Me Home" in 2012. The boys are also signed to Columbia Records in the United States, and made history when they became the first British group in US chart history to enter at #1 on Billboard 200 with their debut album. One Direction have also performed during a sold-out tour and won several awards. Since being formed in 2010, the band have sold over 15 million records worldwide. Read more?
