One Direction fans, rejoice: the British pop stars are expected to perform at the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, along with singer Ed Sheeran, among others.

As HuffPost UK reports, One Direction is one of England’s biggest musical ­exports right now, so it seems only fitting the boys take the stage during the closing event in their home country.

Although the news has yet to be confirmed, the teen twitterverse erupted in excitement when the unofficial twitter account dedicated to breaking olympic news, @updateolympic, wrote: “Yes it’s true… Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Jesse J, Taio Cruz and Tinie Tempah will be performing at the closing Ceremony of The Olympics.”

The boys, themselves, haven’t been shy about their love for the Games. Niall Horan recently tweeted: “Dont know if its just me, but the excitement in london is unbelievable! Its gona be a great games.” And Liam Payne revealed his own personal connection to the event: “If i wasnt in 1D , running in the olympics would of been my dream :),” he tweeted.

After a year full of success, One Direction is ready to take it to the next level and add yet another highlight to their career by performing in front of the world at the 2012 Olympics closing ceremonies in London.

According to Gather, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Harry Styles will end the games on a happy note by singing their very addictive tune, “What Makes You Beautiful.” In addition to performing their hit song, it’s rumored that One Direction’s performance will be accompanied by a dancing flash mob, performing a routine choreographed to the song. The Gather also reports that Adele will possibly be involved in some way. Other musicians expected to perform at the closing ceremonies are Take That, The Who, George Michael, and Emeli Sandé.

Performing at the Olympic closing ceremonies will expose One Direction to a whole new audience, as the ceremonies are expected to be watched by millions of people worldwide.

“The main theme of the Olympic closing ceremony will be celebrating the best of British music, so it’s only right that One Direction are opening the show. They are the UK’s biggest music export at the moment behind Adele, who is also rumored to be involved in some way,” a source told British newspaper The Daily Star.

One Direction has come a long way since being put together by Simon Cowell on the UK’s version of The X-Factor. Just a few months ago they were hardly known by people outside their home country, now they have a #1 album worldwide and a sold out world tour. And this will no doubt help them achieve even bigger success as their biggest gig yet.

One Direction comes to Pepsi Center in Denver in July 2013.

‘I just think it’s fun and the action’s great,’ Louis Tomlinson tells MTV News on the red carpet.

Armed with Nerf guns, the five guys of One Directionhit up the “Men in Black 3″ premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre, ready to face any kind of challenges.

The fivesome, who kicked off their headlining U.S. tour on Tuesday night, took a break from the road to catch the film. They also chatted with MTV News on the red carpet about why they felt they needed a line of defense for the fete.

“We’re safe [with them and we'll use them on] anyone who gets brave,” Louis Tomlinson joked about their Nerf guns. But the fellas did have a real reason for wanting to catch the film: They are big fans of the “Men in Black” franchise and have been for quite some time.

“[They are] great films, aren’t they?” Tomlinson added. “I just think it’s fun and the action’s great. We were young when the first came out, so we kind of grew up with them.”

Once inside the theater, instead of having to fend off anyone who might have gotten in their way, they gave the guns away to a few young fans who ran up to them. While security did their best to keep fans away from the boy banders, one young girl managed to get to the floppy-haired Harry Styles. All five guys agreed to give the girl their autograph. Before the film started, they hung out in their seats, munching on popcorn while adoring fans and their moms checked the guys out.

Later on, at the after-party held on the USS Intrepid, fans followed the band as they made their way around the bash, including down several flights of stairs to the bathrooms. They didn’t stop for anyone, but they smiled and waved occasionally.

The guys won’t have too much time to hit up more movie premieres since they are back to playing Thursday night (May 24) in Virginia. One Direction will continue on their summer tour through July. Meanwhile, “Men in Black 3″ opens Friday.
