One Direction, the biggest-selling global act to emerge from “The X Factor,” won three prizes at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, which were presented on May 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. ABC had the U.S. telecast of the show. The nominations and awards were based on Billboard’s tracking period from March 12, 2012 to March 10, 2013.
One Direction won the awards for Top Pop Artist, Top New Artist and Top Duo/Group. Of these three categories, only Top New Artist was shown during the telecast.
As previously reported, One Direction was unable to attend the 2013 Billboard Music Awards because the group was on tour in Italy. One Direction had 10 nominations in eight categories at the awards show.
Taylor Swift was the show’s top winner. She took home eight awards: Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album (for “Red”), Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Country Album (for “Red”) and Top Country Song (for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”).
Other multiple winners included Rihanna and Gotye (who won four awards each); Madonna, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Nicki Minaj (who won three awards each); and Baauer, Jenni Rivera and tobyMac (who won two prizes each).
Maroon 5, Adele, PSY, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Michel Telo, Mumford & Sons, Matt Redman, David Guetta and Skrillex won one award each.
Special awards were given to Prince (Billboard Icon Award), Christina Aguilera (Voice of a Generation) and Katy Perry (Woman of the Year).
Bieber won the Milestone Award, a new prize that was awarded to an artist who had a milestone on the Billboard charts in the eligible time period. Unlike the other awards at the show, the Milestone Award is voted on by fans.
Tracy Morgan hosted the show. Performers included Prince; Swift; Bieber; Bruno Mars; Selena Gomez; the Band Perry; Guetta featuring Akon and Ne-Yo; Chris Brown; Macklemore & Ryan Lewis; Pitbull featuring Aguilera and Morten Harket of A-ha; Miguel; Nas; Minaj featuring Lil Wayne; Ed Sheeran; Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull; Icona Pop; and Will.i.am featuring Bieber.
Former “X Factor” U.K. judge Kelly Rowland (who is set to replace Britney Spears on “The X Factor” U.S. judging panel, according to Us Weekly and other media outlets) was one of the presenters at the show. Other presenters included Shania Twain, Jennifer Nettles, Jepsen, PSY, Alyssa Milano, Avril Lavigne, Hayden Panettiere, Kid Rock, Gomez, Florida Georgia Line, Will.i.am, Ariana Grande, Emmy Rossum, Jason Derulo, Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Morrison, Chloe Grace Moretz, Gabriel Mann, Stana Katic, Austin Mahone, Wiz Khalifa, Sky Blu, Cee-Lo Green, Celine Dion, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe.
