Anglo-Irish boy band One Direction secured their second number one in the UK album chart with their new release “Midnight Memories”, sales figures showed on Sunday.
The five-strong band’s third studio album beat Take That singer Gary Barlow’s latest solo offering, “Since I Saw You Last”, in the race to the top spot.
The Official Charts Company, which compiles the figures, said “Midnight Memories” had sold 237,000 copies in the last week, making it the fastest selling album of 2013.
One Direction have enjoyed global success since coming third in the 2010 series of “The X Factor”, the British television talent show on which Barlow is currently a judge.
Their debut album, “Up All Night”, reached number two in Britain in 2011 and their follow-up, “Take Me Home”, went to number one last year. Both topped the U.S. album chart.
Barlow had to settle for second place, while his Take That partner Robbie Williams slipped from first position to third with “Swings Both Ways”.
In the singles chart, Scottish singer Calvin Harris and Swedish DJ Alesso were a new entry at number one with “Under Control”, a collaboration with the English band Hurts.
Last week’s number one, “Somewhere Only We Know”, by English singer Lily Allen, slipped to fourth place.

One Direction are revealed as the stars with which the nation wants to spend the next 12 months, after topping the best-selling calendar list.
The pop music heartthrobs – whose Midnight Memories album is at number one – headed the sales top 10 compiled by official licensed calendar firm Danilo for a second year running.
They were just ahead of cult computer game Minecraft which has taken children and young teens by storm and was number two in the bestseller list.
The 50th anniversary Doctor Who calendar took third place in the chart, compiled from sales through Amazon, HMV, Calendar Club and other retailers. Other TV favourites featured were US comedy Big Bang Theory (seventh place), BBC motoring show Top Gear (ninth) and award-winning sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys (10th).
The only other music star to figure in the top 10 was Sir Cliff Richard who took sixth position, as he did last year.
After topping this year’s list, One Direction said: “Thanks to all our fans for making us number one again.”
Danilo, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, claims that one in four UK homes has one of its official calendars on the wall.
One Direction have claimed the fastest-selling UK album of the year so far.
The boyband’s latest collection Midnight Memories has sold 187,660 copies so far this week, with a further 48 hours of sales yet to be added to that total.
It means they have already bettered the UK’s previous fastest-selling album of 2013, which was Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, reports Music Week.
The French duo’s latest album shifted 165,091 copies during its first week on sale back in May.
Midnight Memories has also beaten One Direction’s first-week sales for their previous two albums.
Their debut Up All Night sold 138,631 during its first week back in 2011, while follow-up Take Me Home sold 155,316 copies in week one back in 2012.
What’s more, One Direction’s Midnight Memories is currently over 100,000 copies ahead of its nearest rival, which is Gary Barlow’s Since I Saw You Last.
The Take That star’s first solo album in 14 years is currently at number two, with sales of 87k so far this week.
One Direction are set to have the fastest-selling album of 2013 after their third record sold 145,000 copies in three days.
According to the latest chart update, Midnight Memories is outselling Gary Barlow’s new album Since I Saw You Last by almost three copies to one.
The boy band’s record is also selling more copies than every other artist in the top five combined.
It is the former X Factor group’s third album in as many years.
The Official Charts Company says that, if One Direction’s sales continue at this pace, it will be fastest-selling album of the year beating Daft Punk’s total.
Random Access Memories sold 165,000 copies in its first week on release in May.
One Direction’s second record, Take Me Home, went to number one last year with their debut, Up All Night, making it to number two in the Official Album Chart in 2011.
Robbie Williams’ Swings Both Ways, which became the UK’s 1,000th number one album last week, is down two places to number three.
Meanwhile, Olly Murs’ Right Place Right Time has gone up 92 places to number four, following the release of a special edition.
Boyzone’s BZ20, celebrating 20 years since the band formed, completes the top five.
Emeli Sande has the biggest-selling album of the year with Our Version of Events but so far in 2013 no record has sold more than a million copies.
Meanwhile, in the Official Singles Chart, Calvin Harris and Alesso featuring Hurts look likely to knock Lily Allen from number one, with their new track Under Control.
McFly, who recently announced they would be forming the supergroup McBusted, are in second place with Love Is On The Radio.
One Direction are at number three with Story of My Life, while Gary Barlow is in fourth with Let Me Go.
Lily Allen has dropped to fifth in the chart with her version of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know.
ONE DIRECTION star Zayn Malik’s mum has organised a £20,000 Christmas toybox for a children’s cancer ward – paid for by the band.
Tricia Malik got her son and his bandmates to buy goodies for sick kids in the oncology unit at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
The gifts from the boys are expected to include toys, signed merchandise and dozens of VIP gig tickets.
It is the second year Tricia has persuaded the band to play Santa but their involvement was kept under wraps.
Dundee fundraiser Charlie Kean got in touch with Tricia to see if Little Things stars Zayn, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne could help out.
But Charlie said the toybox’s contents would not be revealed until Christmas.
He said: “It’s amazing they’re getting involved to help desperately ill children.
“Last year’s box was filled with toys but there were also signed programmes, merchandise and tickets.
“The array of emotions from the children that went to the gig was unbelievable. I don’t think they’ve ever been as happy or excited.”
Delighted mum Tricia said: “It’s amazing to be able to see what a big difference these toys and gifts are making to kids’ lives.”
One Direction shared the first tour dates of their 2014 Where We Are stadium tour way back in May, when the boy band plotted some shows in South America and in the U.K. On Tuesday (Nov. 26), the 1D boys finally announced the North American leg of the trek, which kicks off on Aug. 1, 2014 in Toronto.
The 21-city run was announced live on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday morning, and will be presented by Nabisco. One Direction performed their latest single, “Story of My Life,” on the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday night on the eve of the release of their third studio album, “Midnight Memories.”
Tickets for the Live Nation-promoted North American shows go on sale on Dec. 7. That also happens to be the date that One Direction invades “Saturday Night Live” for its second performance on the show.
“We simply can’t wait to be back in North America touring and to see our fans,” says the group’s Niall Horan in a press statement. “It’s going to be absolutely huge!”
Check out the 1D North American dates below:
One Direction’s new album “Midnight Memories” is easily heading for No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 chart with a robust sales start. This week’s top album, projected to be an encore by Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP 2,” will be made official on Billboard.com tomorrow morning.
Industry sources forecast the 1D’s album to sell 500,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Dec. 1. The album — which was released on Monday, Nov. 25 — has a possibility of reaching the 525,000 to 550,000 range. The number is a bit hard to pin down, thanks to the marketplace being thrown for a loop by the Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday-related promotions and holiday shopping festivities.
That said, a start north of 500,000 for Midnight Memories would likely give the group its third No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, following its first two chart-topping albums: “Up All Night” and “Take Me Home.”
Both of those sets were released in 2012, and debuted at No. 1. The former sold 176,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while the latter opened with 540,000.
The new Billboard 200 chart’s top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Amazingly, if One Direction debuts at No. 1, they’ll become the first group since the Monkees in 1967 to reach No. 1 with their first three albums.
It’s a fitting chart feat, since both acts were born on TV. One Direction was formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K. TV talent show “The X Factor,” and saw their debut album bow in their home country the following year.
As for the Monkees, the quartet (Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork) was recruited explicitly to star in a TV show. That show, “The Monkees,” premiered on Sept. 12, 1966 on ABC. The group’s self-titled debut album was released shortly thereafter, and climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its sixth week on the chart. The act followed up the No. 1 success with three more consecutive No. 1s in 1967: “More of the Monkees,” “Headquarters” and “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.”
If “Midnight Memories” sells 500,000, it will also give One Direction their second sales week greater than a half-million (following “Take Me Home’s” debut). Since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991, only two other pop groups have logged multiple half-million sales weeks: ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys.
‘N Sync did it seven times with three different albums, while Backstreet Boys did it nine times with two albums. Other groups and bands have earned numerous 500,000-plus frames, but they were all R&B, rap, country or rock acts.
A fair chunk of One Direction’s debut is fueled by pre-orders via the iTunes Store. Sources suggest that nearly 200,000 pre-orders were registered before the album went on sale. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all of the pre-orders will translate into actual, completed sales, but one can imagine a good deal of them will.
All it takes is one listen of Midnight Memories and it’s pretty clear that One Direction have embraced an edgier sound on the album.
Many of the songs have rock-anthem flourishes, as heard on the title track, as well as softer, folk moments, as evidenced on the album’s second single, “Story Of My Life.”
While some fans were initially skeptical of the updated sound on the group’s third studio release, they now love it.
“It took me a second to like it ’cause I listened to it first and then I was not sure,” Joy told MTV News outside of “Good Morning America” where 1D performed and announced 2014 tour dates. “But then I kept listening to it and I got used to it and I started liking it.”
Angela added, “To be honest, at first, I was kind of like ‘Oh, you know, this isn’t the original stuff that they do,’ but eventually I really started liking it. I liked how it’s getting older.”
According to the loyal Directioners, Midnight Memories shows the band’s musical and lyrical growth from Up All Night and Take Me Home, which was released just last November.
“Well I think the first two albums kind of had like a bubblegum poppy kind of sound,” Rachael said. “And this is more kind of like classic rock sounding. And it’s something that they’ve never done before. But I think they’re doing a great job with it and it’s cool to hear something different, kind of keeps people interested, keeps us on our toes.”
Sasha noted that it’s “like indie rock. I love how they’ve become indie rock; it’s amazing.”
Other fans think 1D’s musical growth mirrors their real-life move into adulthood.
“It just fits their personality and how they’re growing up more and more,” Taleyah said.
Just 24 hours after releasing their third studio album ‘Midnight Memories’, One Direction have stormed to the top of the iTunes downloads charts worldwide.
Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson released their hotly-anticipated album yesterday and loyal Directioners have snapped up the record online, sending it to the download charts’ number one spots.
The ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ singers worked hard to promote the record, appearing on the UK and US X Factor last week, as well as performing at the AMAs and hosting a mammoth seven-hour ‘1D Day’ online broadcast.
All of their hard work has clearly paid off and the deluxe edition of ‘Midnight Memories’ is currently top of every single iTunes top 10 listed by Apple, including the charts for the UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Tracks from their third studio album are also doing well in the iTunes Song Downloads Charts, with ‘You & I’ topping the download chart for Belgium, Finland, Greece and Portugal while ‘Don’t Forget Where You Belong’ and ‘Story Of My Life’ tally up another six number ones between them. 1D’s latest single ‘Story Of My Life’ is also still in the top five most downloaded tracks for the UK and US.
Fans will have to wait until Sunday to see if ‘Midnight Memories’ knocks Robbie Williams off the top of the Official UK album chart. The band were given more creative freedom on their latest album and Niall worked with McFly to write ‘Don’t Forget Where You Belong’ while Harry was joined by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody to write ‘Something Great.’ 20-year-old Niall also plays guitar on the album.
Their iTunes chart success tops off a busy month, the ‘Kiss You’ singers recently took home the Favourite Pop/Rock Album and Favourite Pop/Rock Group prizes at the American Music Awards and also triumphed at the MTV EMAs, scooping three awards while Harry won the Best Look prize.
The lads are currently still in the US where remaining engagements include an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’. The ‘Live While We’re Young’ singers will make a guest appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live’ next month. 1D recently completed a huge world tour and are currently getting ready to hit the road again in Spring 2014, when they will embark on a short UK stadium tour.
‘Midnight Memories’ is available now.
“Midnight Memories,” One Direction’s third album (out November 25) is perhaps the most representative work of the band’s five members to date, with the group contributing lyrics to 12 of the 14 songs on the standard edition (and an additional three on the 18-track deluxe.) It boasts more guitar work from member Niall Horan, and an abundance of references to ’80s rock, from the Joan Jett-esque title track to the Police-worthy “Diana” and a more overt rewriting of Rick Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl” on bonus cut “Does He Know.”
There’s also a dual focus on a more mature, folk-pop sound, as evidenced by second single “Story Of My Life,” and additional tracks like the Mumford-leaning “Through The Dark,” and “Happily,” which could go neck and neck with Avicii’s “Wake Me Up!” for the year’s most insanely catchy song to combine banjo and synths.
“The facts we knew going into the making of this album was that they were going to do a stadium tour, so we wanted to make sure these songs really felt at home when you play them for that many people live as well as when you put it on in your car,” says Julian Bunetta, a veteran music producer on “The X Factor” who produced and co-wrote a large majority of “Midnight Memories” with the boys.
Speaking with Billboard from the U.K. after a brief 10-day vacation, the band members seem refreshed and eager as ever to maintain the grueling pace of the last three years. “I’m a night owl, so the late-night recordings don’t really bother me — as long as I can sleep in late!” says Zayn Malik of the recording process. Adds Harry Styles more succinctly, “I don’t think it’s that hard to stay focused. We get to go to amazing places and work with great people, it’s just really fun!”
Bunetta wrote with the boys often individually or in pairs of two in hotel rooms and on tour buses across a half-dozen dates of the band’s UK tour and another half-dozen in the States this past summer. “They’re experiencing all this crazy stuff right now,” he says. “It’s like the prime ripe moment, they’ve been like sponges and now they want to express it and talk about it. They know who they are better than anyone and they also know what their fans want better than anyone.”
Harry Styles and his One Direction bandmates pulled a fast one on former lover Taylor Swift – by denying her the best rock/pop album gong at the American Music Awards.
The band came out on top over 23-year-old Swift, who was also nominated in the same category with her album, Red, but the 1D boys took home the award for their record, Take Me Home.
‘Wow this is incredible. An absolute honour. We know this is fan voted and we love our fans – you are incredible!’ Louis Tomlinson, 21, said accepting the award.
‘This is our first time at the American Music Awards and we’re picking up an award. This is absolutely incredible. I’d like to thank our label. I’d like to thank our management. I’d like to thank Simon. And I’d like to thank the fans for voting for us,’ echoed 20-year-old Liam Payne.
The boys also scooped best rock/pop group on the night with Irishman Niall Horan making a speech upon the second win.
‘Wow. To be here is just an honour and to pick up two awards is just incredible,’ he said.
‘To be able to perform here as well, thank you so much again to our fans. Literally, you mean the world to us and there is no way we would be able to do this without you. Thank you,’ he gushed.
‘I forgot to thank some people earlier so I’m glad I’m able to do this again,’ announced Payne, going on to thank a list of friends an associates.
Styles remained silent throughout both acceptance speeches – however his former lover, Swift, did scoop four awards including best country album, favourite female pop/rock artist, favourite female country artist and artist of the year.
Justin Timberlake also scooped two gongs with best male rock/pop artist and favourite soul/RnB album.
Meanwhile Ariana Grande completed her rise to prominence on the night as Nathan Sykes’ girlfriend was awarded new artist of the year.

LOUIS TOMLINSON, ZAYN MALIK, LIAM PAYNE, HARRY STYLES and NIALL HORAN asked me to be the one journalist to listen to their new tunes.
And Midnight Memories doesn’t disappoint – it’s one of the best boyband albums ever.
WITHOUT any doubt, Midnight Memories marks 1D’s maturing as a band — taking them in a new direction away from straightforward teen pop.
Overall, the album is much more guitar influenced than their previous two releases.
A Seventies glam rock vibe reminiscent of QUEEN or THE DARKNESS is evident on a number of anthemic tracks, clearly written with the band’s first stadium tour next year in mind.
Two songs co-written by Harry are heavily influenced by MUMFORD & SONS, in a sign the band are keen to up their musical credibility.
Solo vocals from all five guys are also showcased more than on their previous albums, with Louis and Zayn in particular being given more time at the microphone.
Interestingly, the lads also spent time apart to write the album, with Louis and Liam working as a pair, and Niall teaming up with his McFLY pals.
The lyrical themes take in the huge changes to the guys’ personal lives over the past two years.
But, as you would expect, the songs are dominated by themes of young love and heartbreak. They are teen idols, after all.
Track by track
Best Song Ever: The first single — released to promote their film This Is Us — is the most light-hearted and poppy track by a long way. It’s a good bridge from the first two collections.
Story Of My Life: The only song that all five members wrote together. The stripped-back, sentimental guitar ballad was chosen for the second single as an introduction to the band’s more mature new sound.
Diana: One of the most fun boyband odes to a girl I’ve heard, with lyrics including: “I speak a different language but still hear your call.” It has a soaring opening and the chorus is instantly catchy. Louis and Liam — the two members of the group who have contributed the most songs on the album — co-wrote it. And don’t worry, I’m assured it’s not an ill-judged reference to the late Princess Di.
Midnight Memories: The title track kicks off the album’s rock feel, with a LENNY KRAVITZ-style guitar opening. The chorus has the same anthemic feel as Queen’s We Will Rock You. It’s also the closest 1D have come to swearing on a song, with the lyric: “Same old shh but a different day.”

One Direction had better prepare for hordes of screaming fans after announcing that they will be hosting a book signing in London next week at a secret location.
The ‘Story Of My Life’ hitmakers will be releasing their latest autobiography ‘Where We Are’ on November 18, which will no doubt chart how the lads have dealt with their meteoric rise to fame over the last couple of years following on from their previous memoirs, ‘One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story)’ which was released in 2011 and 2012′s Dare to Dream: Life As One Direction,’ which was made available in the US.
Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne will be making an appearance at a WHSmiths store at a yet to be announced location in London to meet fans and sign copies of the book. Tickets for the event will go on sale today at 6pm and you can pick them up here.
The appearance will mark the first time the group have been seen together since wrapping up their ‘Take Me Home’ world tour in Japan earlier this month, and are now enjoying a much-needed break from the hectic jaunt which kicked off in February.
Niall has been spotted spending time with family at home in Ireland but has also made time to attend a celebrity tennis event, while Harry has attended his older sister’s university graduation.
Zayn, Liam and Louis have also been enjoying some much needed downtime and have also caught up with their respective girlfriends Perrie Edwards, Sophia Smith and Eleanor Calder. The five-piece will also be heading to the US towards the end of this month for an appearance on Good Morning America where they will promote their anticipated third album ‘Midnight Memories’ which is out on November 25.

One Direction is giving back!
Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan will take part in tomorrow’s annual BBC Children in Need charity event, which helps raise money for disadvantaged youths all around the U.K.
The Brit boybanders will host a portion of the televised event from the set of the popular British soap opera EastEnders, specifically inside the show’s famous fictional pub The Queen Vic. They will also be performing their hit song “Best Song Ever” for the first time on British TV.
The boys recently helped design a personalized Pudsey teddy bear that is being auctioned off to raise money for the charity. “Check out our 1D Pudsey for @BBCCiN that was inspired by our incredible fans. Auctions live now, get bidding at http://bbc.co.uk/pudsey #CiN,” Payne tweeted this week.
And the band recently told the Mirror, “We are often asked what the driving force behind us is and the answer is always the same—our fans. Our fans are the ones who got us where we are today and who inspire everything we do, including bear designs! So, meet One Directioner Pudsey. Please do dig deep and bid on our bear, it really will go on to make a difference.”
Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Judi Dench, and Helen Mirren also reportedly helped design bears for the charity initiative.
